Challenges facing the district
Poverty Situation
A national baseline survey indicates that 44% of the population living in Trans-Nzoia lives below the poverty line. Generally there are very few industries in the district hence unemployment level is high 47% of the work force.
Education
High drop out rates in primary and secondary schools. Annual primary school drop out rate is 40%. The youths are not adequately occupied leading to idleness, drug addiction and social upheaval.
Child Abuse and Vulnerability
Prostitution is on the increase especially child prostitution. The number of girls appearing on the street a twilight is rapidly increasing. Number of street children in Kitale town and small urban centers is on the increase. Post election violence has made the situation even worse.
Recreational and sport facilities
There is an inadequate recreational and sports facility in the district. The rural areas are more affected by this and there are no cultural canters. There is no other stadium in the whole district except the Kenyatta which is Kitale town. This stadium is in a depleted state.
Insecurity
The tribal clashes rocked many parts of Kenya in 1992.In Trans-Nzoia district 1600 families were rendered homeless and more than 470 lost theirs life’s
In 1997 another tribal clashes happened again and over 1000 people lost their lives, and 560 families fled from their homes after their houses were burned down. A total of 2160 families became refuges and only about 500 families have gone back to their lands to date.
Being an insecurity area there are few projects giving opportunities to affected persons to interact with other people from other cultural backgrounds coming together for solidarity and harmony purposes.
