Trans-nzoia Youth Sports Association (TYSA) is a leading not for profit Community Based Organization delivering valued based sports programmes in Kenya.

Founded in 2001, TYSA endeavours to Inspire and Empower Young People to develop knowledge, skills and their status by increasingly exposing them to sports, education, training and livelihood opportunities.

Governed by a commensurate constitution and Managed by an astute Management board, TYSA's leadership is visionary and committed.


Its strongest pillar has been a wide base of over 50 volunteers from cross-cutting professional fields.

From a humble beginning of six beneficiaries, TYSA has grown to serving 112 direct beneficiaries while over 5,000 access our outreach services annually.

TYSA works in the larger Trans-nzoia County with a total population of over 700,000. TYSA has managed to harness the little resources at its disposal to transform thousands of lives in the local communities where it operates.

TYSA collaborates and Networks with 10 International Organizations and over 20 local organizations e.g. Community Based 0rganizational and National NGOs.

We also have strong presence and network with over 30 grassroots groups & institutions of learning. As a result, TYSA is recognized and trusted in communities where it works, as well as by the partners it collaborates with.

TYSA is a member of Sports for Social Change Network Kenyan Chapter, a co- founding member of Kenya Netherlands for Sports and Development and also a co-founder member of the East African Network in Sports and Development

TYSA was one of 2007 CARE/USA Award winner and received the CARE-Chege Special Award for Youth Education, Kenya Community Development Fund (KCDF) for Outstanding Community Service 2009 and 2010 UN MDG award winner in promoting gender equity and empowering women

Our Staff

Executive Director: Gichuki Francis, Bachelor of Arts- Education ,Kenyatta University with vast experience in Youth Empowerment and Community Development.

Program Manager: Lameck Nyandega, Strong capacity in Leadership development with vast experience in program and project management.

Football Coordinator: Francis Ojilo, Trained KNVB Soccer Coach with grass root experiences in group management and dynamics.

Training Coordinator: Christine Osere, Vast experience in capacity building and trainings

Girls We Can Coordinator: Monica Ngede, experienced in gender empowerment

Child Participation and Protection: Wanyonyi Lucas, experienced with child issues especially participation and protection

Chairperson: Jackline Ignonga, a nurse by profession and experienced in community participation

Treasurer: Eliud Akanga, community development specialist with experience in book keeping and accounts

Secretary: Anthony Gitei, a student of electrical engineering at Eldoret Polytechnic with passion for youth empowerment

Where we work

Trans-nzoia is an agricultural county in Rift Valley situated between Mount Elgon and the Cherengani Hills at an elevation of around 7000 feet.

Its population is 818,757 as in 2009 (census) with 407,172 Male and 411,585 respectively

Kitale town which the capital of Trans-nzoia County was founded in 1908 by white settlers. A branch line of the Uganda Railway from Eldoret reached Kitale in 1926 which promoted growth of the town. Coordinates: 1 01?N 35 00?E

Over many decades, North Rift Kenya has experienced conflict caused by diverse cultural background. Many communities migrated to these areas after independence. Trans-nzoia County hosts almost all the 42 tribes of Kenya. Ethnic violence is a common occurrence while cross boarder conflict exist causing deaths and loss of property. Many children and women seek refugee in Kitale. Kitale town and other upcoming townships are home for such people fleeing from Conflict prone areas of West Pokot and Turkana and even neighboring countries. North Rift Kenya is characterized by:

  • Ethnic conflict
  • Insecurity
  • Cattle rustling
  • Diseases i.e. HIV /AIDS infection and stigma, Malaria, Typhoid etc
  • Prostitution especially for young girls
  • High number of Street children
  • Child labour
  • High Unemployment
  • Poor education standards and soaring School drop out rates /Illiteracy
  • Drug abuse
  • Poor farming methods
